Anatomy of sound — what actually creates the sound you hear.

Every keyboard sound profile is the sum of six acoustic factors. Change any one and you shift the entire character. Master all six and you can engineer any sound on the spectrum. Impact percentages reflect EPOMAKER Sound Lab tuning experience.

Switch (housing & stem)

The mechanical core. POM housings produce round, soft tones. Nylon-PA gives fuller body. Polycarbonate adds brightness. Long-pole stems shorten throw and intensify the bottom-out — the single highest-leverage choice in any build.

Plate material & mount

The structural layer that transfers and reflects switch energy. Aluminum and brass ring brightly; PC and POM absorb and soften. Mount style decides whether energy dissipates into resonance or stays a sharp impact.

Case construction

The acoustic chamber. Aluminum cases ring with metallic harmonics; ABS absorbs highs. Compact 60–65% cases concentrate resonance for tighter sound; full-size spreads it wider and fuller.

The detail nobody hears until it's missing. Krytox 205g0 on stem rails kills scratch; spring lube removes ping. Over-lube kills tactility. Right = pure character; wrong = noise.

How we record — and why you can trust what you hear.

Keyboard sound videos are hard to compare — every room, mic, and typist is different. Our sound files are recorded under a fixed scientific protocol so what you hear in our preview is what you hear at your desk.

A purpose-built booth with broadband absorption on all walls and a DSP-treated ceiling. Floor noise calibrated so the keyboard is the only sound the microphone captures.

Thock

Profile

The deep, low-frequency resonant sound of a well-built gasket-mount keyboard. Round, satisfying, drum-like.

Clack

Profile

The bright, high-frequency snap from minimal-foam ABS-capped builds with stiff plates. Vintage typewriter character.

Marble

Profile

The bouncy, round pop from POM-housed switches in PC-plate builds with light foam. Internal "rolling" character.

Mahjong

Profile

The percussive tile-on-hardwood snap from long-pole stems on aluminum plates with no case foam. Asia's signature.

Pop

Profile

Short, snappy, popcorn-like discrete pops from long-pole stems in compact cases. Sharper than marble, rounder than mahjong.

Two-Beat

Profile

The double acoustic event unique to tactile switches: bump engagement up top, bottom-out below. The original mechanical sound.

Ping

Defect

An unwanted high-frequency metallic ring, usually from an unlubed spring. Sounds like a tiny bell after each keystroke. Fix with spring lube.

Avoid: Unlubed springs · dry stab wires

Rattle

Defect

Loose, irregular noise from a poorly tuned stabilizer or a loose stem-to-housing fit. Cleanup with stab lube and the band-aid mod.

Avoid: Unbalanced stabs · low-tolerance housings

Hollow

Defect

Cheap, echoey character from an empty case interior with no foam on a non-tuned build. Different from intentional case resonance.

Avoid: Cheap tray-mount cases with no foam

Bottom-out

Event

The moment a keystroke reaches full travel (~4mm). The dominant sonic event in linears; one of two events in tactile builds.

Key in: Most profiles · all linear builds

Top-out

Event

The sound of the switch returning to rest after release. Audible mainly on stiff or clacky builds — often the source of "clack."

Key in: Clacky · Mahjong · Tactile rebound

Resonance

Concept

Sustained vibration of the case after the strike. Controlled resonance = deep thock; uncontrolled = hollow ringing.

Tune by: Foam strategy · case material · mount

Long-pole

Build

A stem geometry where bottom-out lands earlier (~3.5mm vs 4mm). Concentrates impact into a tighter transient — basis for poppy and mahjong.

Look for: Wisteria Linear V2 — or check stem pole length in any switch spec sheet

Decay

Concept

How quickly a keystroke's sound dies after impact. Short decay = articulate; long decay = full / thocky. Tuned via foam and plate.

Adjust with: Foam density · plate flex

Transient

Concept

The initial sharp attack before the body of the sound develops. Sharp = clacky / mahjong / poppy; soft = creamy / silent.

Sharpen with: Stiff plate · long-pole · no foam
