Pathetic mysteries abound (probably)

I’ve been a loyal Epomaker customer for a while. I own and enjoy the Galaxy100, HE68 Lite, TH98, TH99, Hero84, and AK820 PRO. I’ve purchased switches and keycaps from Epomaker, too. So when I took a chance on Mystery Box E – Classic Keyboard Edition, I knew I might receive a duplicate of something I already owned. And I was totally fine with that. I was prepared for just about anything.

However, the moment I cut through the wrapping and saw the diagram on the box, my heart sank. I didn’t get something fun. I got the Dynatab 75, the model that trades any kind of display for a slot that’s allegedly meant to prop up phones and tablets.

Let’s talk usability. I tested three devices:

• My Samsung S23 Ultra: Only fits if I take off the tank of a case that protects it. Why should I have to take off the phone case just to use this board? Ugh! In landscape mode, the slot cuts off part of the bottom of the screen, so I can’t press app shortcuts that sit along the bottom. It’s bad design, plain and simple.

• iPad 11th Gen: Doesn’t fit in landscape. In portrait, it fits but has no support because it’s too skinny to be held in place by tension, so it tips over and falls backward. If my iPad had cracked while out of its case, I wouldn’t be using a sarcastic tone. I’d be using a wrecked Dynatab 75 to dig a shallow grave for it.

• Lenovo P12: This device actually fit in the slot while still in its case, but when it fell backward due to its weight, it pulled the Dynatab with it. Imagine, "I tried to hold a P12 today...but I couldn't. Instead I fell flat on my back still holding that stud of a P12. So my keys were all touching its...uhm front...yeah...front side, while my **** was up in the air. Awkward!" I don’t hate the P12 for what happened. I blame the Dynatab for being too light. This could have easily been solved with a small bar of metal in the base. You know, maybe shave off a few grams from something massive like the Galaxy100 and give the Dynatab a little backbone.

Beyond the weight issue, the Dynatab 75 has real problems:
• Missed keypresses
• Double key entries
• A recessed USB-C port that doesn’t work with most standard cables
• Unreliable Bluetooth connection
• A Delete key and Right Arrow key that don’t work at all

So I got a keyboard that can’t support devices, can’t register inputs consistently, can’t connect via Bluetooth properly, and can’t function as intended in wired mode either. And all this from a keyboard that was included in a “Classic Keyboard” mystery box.

Now, let’s talk about the mystery. The product page listed six potential keyboards: TH98, MC66, Dynatab 75, Brick87, EP75, and one “Hidden Keyboard Box.” But there was no indication of how many of each were in circulation. Were there 500 Dynatabs and only 10 of each of the others? Was the Hidden Keyboard a real offering, or just a unicorn listed to generate excitement?

Let’s say the stock looked something like this:
• 500 Dynatab 75s
• 10 TH98s
• 25 Brick87s
• 5 EP75 V2s
• 40 MC66s
• 1 Hidden Keyboard Box

That would mean a roughly 14.3% chance of getting anything other than a Dynatab 75, or an 85.7% chance of landing what I consider to be the weakest item on the list. I have no proof that these are the actual odds. But if my experience lines up with what others are saying in reviews and Reddit threads, it starts to feel less like speculation and more like a strong possibility. But again, we just don’t know. And that’s the issue. I’m not mad about losing a gamble. I’m frustrated that the terms of the gamble were never made clear.
This keyboard shouldn’t have been part of the Classic Keyboard mystery box. It belongs in the $9.99 Accessories Mystery Box, especially considering how my tablet wore it like jewelry after dragging it down.

And Epomaker, don’t bother with your canned replies. I’ve read enough of them to know what’s coming: “We regret any confusion or dissatisfaction,” “we understand it may not align with your expectations.” Don’t waste our time. That’s just another layer of disappointment.

If you truly care about your brand and customer experience, do something bold. Send me something you’re actually proud of. A Tide Alice 66 or a black TH99 to pair with my blue one. Better yet, barebones versions of both, along with some Roseveil or Budgerigar switches and a sophisticated set of keycaps so I can build something worth the effort. This may appear shameless of me, but so was sending me that piece of trash you insist is a lovely mystery. If this is how you treat customers, then I’ll just take my loyalty elsewhere. I’ve got options. Plenty of them. And sure I have had all great Epomaker items until I got the Dynatab, but of course it's the bad experience I will always remember much more vividly, especially when I feel bamboozled. So no more recommendations about your merchandise. No more lists of which Epomaker boards work best. No more showing off the boards, caps, or switches with my collea...

Totally not what I was expecting

I was hoping for a usb cable or something, whilst the box was generous (a complete set of new key caps) the colour is horrible and I would not ever use. So it's just stuck in my closet for now.
